The Bible Society

The Bible Society website contains a wealth of ideas and information about their invaluable work. Some eye-opening results from their survey of Bible awareness in the UK are reported in this blog post.

Restoring Confidence in the Bible

Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.  Luke 24.27

Bible Study Groups

There are three Bible Study groups in the Holyford Mission Community.  The groups in Colyton and Musbury meet fortnightly during term times. They look at the weekly Gospel readings.  The Branscombe group meets monthly in Branscombe. We meet to enjoy fellowship, reading the Bible,  lively discussion and prayer together. If you have never been part of such a group, do consider joining one.  You will be most welcome at any of the three, regardless of where you live in the Mission Community.

The Bible wasn’t written in English!

That’s obvious of course – but what your Bible says will be strongly affected by choices the translators have made on a wide range of issues. These examples of  translations of Matthew 6:34 illustrate some of them:

Authorised (King James) Version
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
New Revised Standard Version
So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
The Message
Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

The BibleGateway website is useful for comparing translations. Even small differences can have a surprisingly large effect on what we understand, and no translation is perfect for all needs.
