Accessibility
We have wheelchair access, but the door path is sloping and treacherous in icy conditions. There is a small step at the door, which we think most people would manage, but we could bring over a ramp from the village hall if it were needed. There is a hearing loop provision and a number of large-print hymn books.
History of St Lawrence’s Church
St Lawrence’s Church is of Norman origin with a 15th century tower. The 19th century saw a major rebuild of the church, including a restoration of the nave, south aisle, vestry and porch. The south entrance is a rebuilt Norman doorway.
The church houses some very interesting features, with a font dating from the early 12th century and a ring of four bells, listed in the inventory of 1553 – iiii bells yn the towre their. The treble is dated from approximately 1400.
A brass chandelier hung in the centre of the nave is of special interest, due its size and fine workmanship and is one of only fifteen retained from acquisition between 1650 and 1850. There are also four listed tombs in the churchyard, made from Beer stone dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
